Balchik and "The Quiet Nest" Half day escorted tour |
|
| |
|
Balchik is a small, pretty town and fishing port, idyllic huddled bellow white calk cliffs, one of the most beautiful cities on the Bulgarian Black sea coast.
Long time ago the town was a Thracian village. In the 5th century BC Greek merchants established there a colony under the name of Krunoi, renamed in the 3rd century BC to Dionysololis. During the Middle Ages it became autonomous by the local feudal Balik and the city assumed its name Balchik.
The most famous attractions there are the amazing Botanical garden and the former Summer Residence of Queen Maria - the Quiet Nest palace.
In the garden there are grown more than 3000 plant species from all over the world - a large collection of cacti species (the second largest in Europe after Monaco), candy tree, paper tree, ancient Ginkgo biloba, sand lily, olives and many others - diversity of varieties and forms, palette of bright colors, blooms, trees and bushes.
Amidst the beauty of the park the Quiet Nest palace attracts the visitor’s attention.

in 1924 on the place known as The Three Watermills. The picturesque place chosen by the Romanian queen descends steeply to the sea coast.
As a typical example of residence, built in the style of the Romanticism, the palace complex consists of a number of residential villas, a wine cellar, a monastery, a holy spring, a chapel and many other buildings situated amidst a beautiful park - the Botanical garden.
The whole composition is interesting with its symbolic elements and architectural forms, imported from different parts of the world - earthen jars from Morocco, stone crosses from Bessarabia with inscriptions in Church-Slavonic language, marble thrones from Florence, perfectly illustrating the queen’s beliefs. |
